Catastrophic satellite collision

The crash occurred at approximately 800 meters, the orbit most favored for communications satellites. Authorities both in Russia and the United States are very concerned that this could be a warning sign of crashes to come, due to the huge amount of space debris orbiting earth. Considerable debris was thrown into adjacent orbits ranging from 500 to 1,300 meters. At this time the debris is not routinely tracked or regulated in any manner.
