Shopping Fix: Marshalls, handbags, Cuisinart pans
Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 15:47 With the New Year, I decided it was time to break down and buy a new handbag or two. For years, I went with simple ballistic messenger bags - sturdy, durable, function - but they lacked any style. Then I discovered the Brighton knockoffs several years ago, and got a couple of those at seriously reduced price. They’ve worn well, but worn out. I was simply sick of looking at the one I’ve been carrying for months.
While at Macy’s the other day, I found Tignanello bags. Whoa. Form (style) was following some serious functionality. A handbag is serious business for me - either it functions well or doesn’t follow me home. The Tignanello bags are really well thought out, with loads of sensibly positioned pockets, and the covered magnetic clasps to keep the bags contents secure. The leather is substantial and soft.
What really tipped me over for the one I got, was the hands free option - which gave me messenger bag function with higher style. The best of both worlds. The strap simply unhooks to be either a handle or an across the chest strap. It looks stylish both ways.
And it was a wonderful green. And seriously on sale.
Tempted to buy a second one in a different color, I couldn’t find a style and price I could live with. Hmmm. I’ll bet Marshalls has ‘em. I was right. Marshall’s did indeed. I found several for the right price and was able to decide on one.
I love the way Tignanello bags really open up, and you can find stuff in them. And, as I said the ‘hidden’ magnetic clasp works well, consistently and securely.
So, anyway, I was also looking for a heavy duty sauteuse pan. It’s one of those things for the kitchen that I’ve been wanting for times I’m doing a saute then braise - which I may then slide into the oven or under a broiler. You can also poach many eggs at once, or even ‘deep fry’ items like chicken.
I love it. Marshall’s staff was going all over the store with their little price/inventory guns, marking merchandise down from the already low prices.
I found a great deal on a Cuisinart 3 qt. sautuese pan with cool touch handles and lid. It’s got a really heavy aluminum core bottom that should provide years of even heating. The stainless interior will really stand up to years of use as well.
A great small chef knife and some glass refrigerator containers also came home with me.
Marshall’s is a great place to look for serious markdowns on everyday household items and accessories like handbags. I haven’t had the same success when it comes to clothing and shoes, however.
