    Monday Musings: February 22, 2010

It’s Sunday night as I write this and it’s been a busy weekend. Saturday, along with all the usual errands and household chores that don’t get done during the week, I did make it to a fundraiser for Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid of Nevada. The Senator was there with his wife.

The Senator spoke for a while and answered questions from the audience. For the most part it was the standard stuff you’d expect to hear, but I was pleasantly surprised that he seems to really believe that passing some sort of healthcare reform bill is a possibility. In fact, he stood right there and spoke in support of the Public Option and a reconciliation vote - if that is what the party wants. There’s the kicker, the qualifier.

This is why it’s so damn important for you to contact all the people in Congress that you can, and tell them to insist on a reconciliation vote, and that they must insist on a Public Option as well.

This is simply too important to let it fall through the cracks now, especially since there is renewed momentum to get it done.

If you missed it, take a look at my Friday Fish Wrap post, wherein you’ll find listed the links to all the important congressional contacts.

Call or email them this week. Let’s get this done.

Let’s give Senator Reid the ammo he needs to carry it home.

Ooooh, that awful House healthcare bill examined, page by page

Oh, jeeze … another one of ‘those’ emails that went out with a handy click of the Forward button, and without a bit of due diligence. Admittedly, this one is complex since it goes page for page with somebody’s ( author unknown ) interpretation of the suspect passages contained in the House bill.

Of course it’ all scary as hell, especially for anybody who’s never dealt with the standard annual re-up process on any really large ( as in America’s largest airline - which I get my health insurance from ) American corporation not currently in bankruptcy, having been crushed by providing healthcare costs to employees, their spouses and families.

As in GM. Get my drift?

Fortunately, I deal with this kind of legalese each and every year, about November, when I’ve got to read through pages upon pages of ‘if this, then that, unless the other thing’ legalese. I end up doing nothing, since I’m ‘happy’ with my current plan ( uh, yes there are reservations there).

For ease of discussion and reading, I’ll copy/paste the text of the email at the end of this post. Believe me, you don’t want to wade through it here.

There numerous ‘tip offs’ that it’s the bogus, paranoid ramblings of somebody who either works within the insurance industry or its lobbying firms, somebody who has great health coverage unlike so many millions of others and isn’t likely to lose it or some neo-con/libertarian wingnut that’s hunkered down waiting for the UN troops to swoop in with the black helicopters.

That they keep using language like “yet another payoff for ACORN” tells me it’s the latter.

I began to go through the first dozen or so pages, comparing them side by side with the actual text of the proposed legislation - admittedly, not something everybody has the time or motivation to do. I got my draft of the actual text at http://energycommerce.house.gov/Press_111/20090714/aahca.pdf.

Let’s start at the top of the mis-characterizations contained within the email:

Get this: Healthcare denied is 'rationing'

The clueless wingers and the Libertarians keep filling the print and electronic echo chamber with the propaganda that any meaningful healthcare reform would inevitably lead to ‘rationing’ , which they inaccurately claim is the case in Canada.

Well, my husband and I experienced rationing last night, thanks to the current for-profit system.

It was the first time we’ve ever just given up and walked out of an emergency room.

Why 'The Wrecking Crew' is a must read

From ‘heckuva job Brownie’and Alberto Gonzales to why your city council and mine just never seems to work, I’ve been puzzled at the almost intentional ineptitude that seemed to characterize all levels of governance in this country during the Bush II years. It didn’t seem possible that government could become that incompetent in just eight years. The problem lay in trying to figure this out without a historical context, which is next to impossible.
