Health gifts that keep on giving

I’ve been a big fan of several health and nutrition newsletters over the years, in fact I’ve been a subscriber to the Berkeley Wellness Letter and the Tufts Health & Nutrition Letter since their inception. They are two that I stick with, others having come and gone over the years.

Why not consider giving a years subscription to friends and family this year? This way you don’t have to worry about the size or color being right, and who do you know that isn’t interested in preserving or improving their own health?

    It’s a win-win.

Tufts Health & Nutrition Letter 12 issues for $24.00

University of California, Berkeley Wellness Letter 12 issues for $24.00

Nutrition Action Newsletter from The Center for Science in the Public Interest 10 issues for $10.00

Consumer Reports on Health Online is $19.00 per year unlimited use

If you want to see costs skyrocket, try doing nothing at all

Whoa boy, were the naysayers as happy as pigs in shit when the Congressional Budget Office came out with a less than happy forecast on the cost of the proposed healthcare reforms. You could just hear the cheering from across this great land of ours.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. It’ll cost another $1.6 trillion to the already ballooning federal budget.

As John Packham points out in yesterdays Reno Gazette-Journal, that is only about 1 percent of the projected total gross domestic product over the same time span, expected to be $187 trillion.

Context is everything in a debate like this. When you cherry pick numbers - out of context - they either become meaningless or fodder for those who only get their news from talk radio.

Let me give you one reason that initiating universal coverage will be so expensive:

Food, Inc. coming to theatres on June 12. You'll never look at food the same way again.

It’s time for Americans to take their food back from the corporations, nutritionistas and - to a lesser extent, the government. Get it out of the factory farm mode. Back to sustainable models of real food - the food that fed our grandparents, without the fake, the toxic, the dangerous and the deadly. Let’s shed the weight and related health problems by shedding the fake diets, learning to eat good food in modest quantities, while incorporating a reasonable amount of exercise into each day.

Please go to see Food, Inc. when it opens on June 12, and if you have the time, read “The Eaters Manifesto” by Michael Pollan.

Bill Maher Interviews Michael Pollan about film, Food Inc.

Michael Pollan is one of today’s sharpest commentators answering the questions we should all be asking about where our food comes from, and the real price we’re paying for it in terms of our health and the health of the planet. I’m really looking forward to Food, Inc., in which Eric Schlosser ( Fast Food Nation) and Michael Pollan (The Omnivore’s Dilemma) both star.

A more serious discussion with Michael Pollan appeared last year on Bill Moyers Journal.

The shoe is on the other foot now

It was so huge to be the sick one for more than a year and a half of cancer, and having my husband take constant care of me. I didn’t know quite how to express how much it meant. However, we’re turning the tables a bit right now and I get an opportunity to give back in a small way.

Should you get a flu shot?

Every year I am simply amazed by the number of people that I run into that don’t get flu shots. This really puzzles me, since I can’t uderstand why anybody would want to take a chance being that sick. I’ve had the flu, years ago, and it’s horrible. That’s why I get a shot every year. I don’t want to be that sick again.
